When partnering with patients the goal is to empower patients to control their blood pressure. This is accomplished through a combination of evidence-based communication strategies, helping patients accurately self-measure, and by directing patients and families to resources that support medication adherence and healthy lifestyles.

Learning objectives

• Review the evidence-based non-pharmacological lifestyle interventions to prevent and treat hypertension
• Describe the approximate impact of specific non-pharmacological lifestyle interventions on systolic blood pressure
• Outline the role of collaborative communication including motivational interviewing and evidence-based strategies in promoting patient adherence to lifestyle interventions
• Identify resources that can support clinic staff and patients to learn more about lifestyle interventions
